5 reasons why I love the Percy Jackson and The Olympians series

A set of middle school novels, the Percy Jackson and The Olympians by Rick Riordan is an extremely loved and successful book series. It narrates the life of a young boy who realise that his father is a Greek god and gets himself messed up with godly matters. I can blab about hundred things that I loved about Percy Jackson but since that will probably bore you, here are five reasons for my love towards this amazing book series.

1. The story is super cool

You might have read a dozen books about Greek Mythology but I can safely guess that none of them are plotted in present day. The Percy Jackson series happens in modern day and that makes it so good. It is the mythology of Greek gods mixing up with the culture of our present world. Things get hilarious when the gods tries to adapt to our technologies. I appreciate this unique setup of the story a lot and it is one of the reason I love the series so much.

2. The way it is narrated

The story is narrated by Percy Jackson himself. Rick Riordan tried to give Percy the voice and style of a teenage boy and I think he did it perfectly. So perfect that you will end up wondering if Riordan is actually a teenager. The narrative is extremely snappy and is filled with sarcasm, which makes it extremely relatable and cool. Take for instance the first few lines of the first book, Percy Jackson and The Lightning thief.

“Look, I didn’t want to be a half-blood. If you’re reading this because you think you might be one, my advice is: close this book right now..... Being a half-blood is dangerous. It’s scary. Most of the time, it gets you killed in painful, nasty ways,”

Got the idea of what I was talking about?

3. Greek Mythology

Before reading this book I knew absolutely nothing about Greek myths. Now, I know their god’s name, what departments they work for and all kinds of stuff about them. Percy Jackson and The Olympians series was kind of a knowledge bundle for me. While I don’t know if all of the things portrayed in the book are true or not but it surely pulled my interest towards Greek Mythology.

4. It is hilarious

I would just give you an example here.

“Hades raised an eyebrow. When he sat forward in his throne, shadowy faces appeared in the folds of his black robes, faces of torment, as if the garment was stitched of trapped souls from the Fields of Punishment, trying to get out. The ADHD part of me wondered, off-task, whether the rest of his clothes were made the same way. What horrible things would you have to do in your life to get woven into Hades’ underwear?”

LOL! In the most serious of places and scenes, Percy would crack a joke or two and I would break into laughter. This book is filled up with humour and you will be smiling all the way till the end.

5. It has all the cool elements.

Trolls, fire-throwing demons, a half-goat-half-man, a centaur and then the gods --- Percy Jackson has everything that you will need to excite your brain. I was so much glued to the story that I read all the books in a week. It is super exciting and adventurous. If you pick this book up, you are guaranteed a adventurous journey.
